Amitabha Sil was born in Calcutta, capital of West Bengal in the year 1954. He was very keen in photography from his childhood. Initially he started photography with Zenith camera in 1977. In 1981 he purchased Asahi Pentax K-1000 Camera. And ultimately he purchased  one Digital Camera  (NIKON  D-90 ) in 2010. Since then he is using the same Digital camera i.e. NIKON  D-90 till date.  He passed Diploma Course in Photography  in 1982.
Educational Qualification: Graduate with Chemistry Honours in 1973 from Calcutta University.
Profession:  He is one of the employees (Special Assistant) of a Nationalised Bank of India.

B. He has been invited as one of the Judges from the following 9 different States of India for judging National & International salons:
(i) WEST BENGAL (W.B), (ii) BIHAR, (iii) JHARKHAND,(iv) MADHYA PRADESH (M.P),   (v) MAHARASHTRA,  (vi) ANDHRA PRADESH (A.P),   (vii) RAJASTHAN,  (viii) ASSAM,  (ix) ORISSA.
C. He joined Federation of Indian Photography (FIP) in 1980.
In 1995, he was elected as one of the Executive Committee Members of Federation of Indian Photography (FIP), our National Body of Photography. Since 1995, he has been offering voluntary services till today, without a break, for the Cause of Photography & for the betterment of our National Body of Photography, as one of the E.C. Members of FIP.
D. In December 1985, our Founder Secretary General, Late DR.G.Thomas, requested him to take charge as a Divisional Secretary of the “INTER CLUB CONTEST’ Division of Federation of Indian Photography (FIP).
E. So far he has successfully organized 26 consecutive Inter Club Contests since 1986 without a break, on behalf of Federation of Indian Photography, as a Divisional Secretary. Gradually this Contest has become a very popular contest among the Corporate clubs of Federation of Indian Photography. In 2007 highest number of clubs (i.e., 30 clubs from all over the India) participated in this contest.
Previously this contest was confined in Print section only.

From 2003-2007 FIP had also entrusted him for conducting   FIP INTER CLUB CONTEST in Slide section also in addition to Print section.
He is going to organize the 27th consecutive FIP INTER CLUB CONTEST in the month of December, 2012
He had been invited as one of the Judges by the Recreation Club of the  Geological Survey of India, one of the oldest organization in Asia and the prime organization of India. He has also guided them how to organize an Indian / International salon (Recognised by FIAP).
GUIDE:
Every year he guides many Photo Artists to obtain FIAP HONOURS.  Has guided Mr. Subhasish Banerjee, Mr. Prabhu PV SUB,   Mr.Subrota Roy Chowdhury, Mr. Dilip Mitra, Mr.Prosenjit Dey, Mrs. Sharmali Das for obtaining their AFIAP HONOUR & Mr. Sharad Shrivastava and Mr. Saibal Ghosh for obtaining their  EFIAP HONOUR.
He always tried to motivate the Indian photographers and photographic clubs that among RPS, PSA & FIAP - FIAP is the only International Body of Photography in this world.  RPS & PSA are nothing but merely national bodies. Moreover the financial burden for the Indian photographers for continuing membership (subscription are very high) & Honours application fees for RPS & PSA are much higher than that of FIAP. Any Indian photographers who are the member of FIP (with a nominal subscription fee) become an indirect member of FIAP.
And it is well accepted throughout the WORLD that the FIAP HONOURS are much more prestigious & coveted than that of PSA & RPS.
ORGANISATIONAL   INTEREST:
He is one of the FOUNDER Members of CHHAYAPATH, CALCUTTA, a leading photographic organization of India established in 1983. 
  1. He was one of the Executive Committee Members of Chhayapath, Calcutta during 1984 – 1987
  2. He was also the Course Secretary (1986 – 1987) of the Photographic Course conducted by the Chhayapath, Calcutta. There were two courses (i) Basic Course in Photography – one year & (ii) Diploma Course in Photography – two years. He used to take classes on Photography during that time in those said courses.
  3. He was one of the examiners of seminar papers , submitted by the students of the said Course conducted by Chhayapath, Calcutta.
  4. At present  he  is  one of  the  Lecturers of  the  Basic  Course in Photography conducted by Chhayapath, Calcutta (Recognised by the Federation of Indian Photography)
  5. He  was  the Secretary of Chhayapath, Calcutta during 2009 to 2010.  Also he was  one of the members of Salon Committee and Course Committee of Chhayapath, Calcutta
  6. He, on behalf of Allahabad Bank Recreation Club, organized BANK EMPLOYEES PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985. Those competitions were confined within West Bengal. 
  7. He, as a Salon Chairman, on behalf of Allahabad Bank Recreation Club, made a history in successfully organizing 1st. All India Bank Employees’ Photographic Exhibition in 1987, THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN INDIA ----------------By organizing Bank Employees’ Photographic Exhibition, not only the employees of Allahabad Bank but also the employees of other Banks in India become interested in Photography. Many of them are now become members of Federation of Indian Photography (FIP).
  8. In 1984 ,  he ,  on behalf  of  West  Bengal  Mountaineers’ &Trekkers Confederation, organized “ALL INDIA SALON OF MOUNTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY” - the FIRST OF ITS KIND IN INDIA.
  9. He organized  Mountain  Salons , on behalf  of  West  Bengal Mountaineers’ & Trekkers Confederation from 1984 – 1989.
  10. He introduced many Mountaineers to our National Body of Photography i.e. FIP.
  11. He was the FIP Representative of West Bengal Mountaineers’ & Trekkers Confederation from 1986 -1988. He attended 13th. FIP Governing Body Meeting in the Bombay FIP Convention in 1987 as FIP Representative of W.B.M&T.C
  12. He had successfully organized an ALL INDIA Photographic Conference & Workshop in Yuba Bharati Auditorium in CALCUTTA IN 1990 & arranged 5 different Workshops for the delegates. Huge number of delegates from all over INDIA & even from BANGLADESH were participated the above mentioned Conference & Workshop. He was the Conference Coordinator and under his guidance a new Mountaineering club, The Mountain Vision of Calcutta hosted that CONFERENCE.
  13. He attended FIP Conventions in  Bikaner (1983), Bangalore (1985), Bombay (1987), Bangalore (1995), Jodhpur (2000), Visakhapatnam (2002), Jabalpur (2004), Patna (2006), Lucknow (2008), Jodhpur (2010) & Rajahmundry (2012). He also attended FIP Working Committee Meetings since 1995 at the different FIP conventions.
CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS PROPAGATION OF PHOTOGRAPHY:
  1. Pioneer of “Infra Red Pictorial Photography” in India.     After seeing his Infra Red photographs, many Indian    -     Photographers have been inspired for doing Infra Red Photography.  He has been invited by many organizers /Clubs to give a talk, to organize a seminar in Infra Red Photography.  
  2. His article on “INFRA – RED PHOTOGRAPHY (B & W) was published for the FIRST TIME in the salon catalogue of the 2nd All India Salon of Mountain Photography in 1985, organized by West Bengal Mountaineers’ & Trekkers Confederation. It was very much helpful Article for the Photographers of India because this type of article was not published in India before. His articles on Infra - Red Photography and other topics have been published in many Salon catalogues & journals including Viewfinder (official Journal of Federation of Indian Photography) in December, 1992.
  3. His Article on “Theory of Photographic Emulsions”  was published in March, April & May,1987 issues of Viewfinder Journal, the official Journal of FIP.
  4. To popularize photography in his mother language (Bengali), he used to contribute articles on photography in Bengali in the “Alok Chitram” magazine which had been published annually in Bengali language.
  5. He was one of the Faculty members in FIP Convention at Patna in 2006. He was one of the member of Panel Discussion of “How to judge a Photograph in salons” with Mr. Benu Sen, Hon.EFIAP and Mr. Subroto Ray, EFIAP for the benefit of the delegates.
  6. He was one of the Lecturers in the Workshop organized by the photographic club, FRAME (Raiganj) in February, 2010.   It was a Power point presentation (3 hours) on Composition & Philosophy of Photography.  
  7. He delivered lectures on Infra Red Photography & other topics of  Photography before the members of :-

    2. Chhayapath, Calcutta, West Bengal State.

    5 - SEPETR Club of Republic of Belarus (previously U.S.S.R) invited his works for exhibiting the same in R. Belarus in 1992.
    His photographs had been invited from Malayasia for exhibition of   “WORLD’S TOP PHOTOGRAPHERS” works in 2006.
